A 36-year-old Vietnamese man, Nguyen Minh Hoa, pleaded guilty in Butterworth Magistrates’ Court today to five charges, including attempting to injure an 11-month-old baby with a knife during an incident at a supermarket in Telaga Air last month.
Nguyen admitted to three counts of intentionally causing hurt to a Malaysian man, a Nepalese man, and the infant at Billion Telaga Air supermarket around 1pm. He was also charged with stealing seafood and chicken worth RM180 earlier that day, and overstaying in Malaysia for more than nine months on a social visit pass.
During the proceedings, Nguyen requested leniency, citing his three children and the recent death of his father.
The court sentenced him to a total of eight months in prison for the theft and immigration offences, and imposed a RM20,000 fine for the assault charges, with a default jail term of up to 23 months if the fine is unpaid. Nguyen was unrepresented, while the prosecution was led by Nor Aziah Hasan.
