Man Hit by Car at Penang Toll Plaza After Dispute Over RFID Lane

Date:

A man was injured after being struck by a car at the Perai toll plaza in Penang following a dispute over an RFID lane late last night.

According to a police report lodged by his 31-year-old wife at the Seberang Perai Tengah traffic police station, the incident occurred at about 11.30pm near the Butterworth Outer Ring Road. The couple’s vehicle was unable to pass through the toll due to an issue with the RFID tag detector.

The woman said her husband had exited their car to ask the driver of a white vehicle behind them to reverse so she could back up and clear the lane. However, the situation escalated into a heated argument between the two men.

“The car behind us suddenly reversed and then accelerated towards my husband, knocking him down and hitting our car before fleeing the scene,” she said in the report.

As a result, the man sustained injuries to his left arm, ribs, and right leg. He received treatment at Bukit Mertajam Hospital and is expected to undergo further medical follow-up.

Dashcam footage of the incident showed the driver of the second vehicle stepping out of his car and appearing to retrieve an object from the rear passenger seat before shouting at the vehicle in front to move. The two men were heard exchanging insults during the confrontation.

The footage further showed the victim directing other vehicles away from the lane when the car suddenly rammed into him, reversed, and sped off. Despite being knocked down, the man got up and briefly ran after the vehicle, shouting that the incident had been recorded on dashcam and that police would be contacted.

Police are investigating the case.
