A 27-year-old man was sentenced to a total of 24 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for choking and attempting to rob a woman in a parking lot at Sentosa Parade late last month.
Mohd Norishyam Abdullah pleaded guilty to two charges under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery and Section 323 for causing hurt.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan imposed an 18-month jail term for the attempted robbery and an additional six months for causing injury. The court ordered the sentences to run consecutively.
According to the case facts, the incident occurred at about 6.40pm on November 26, when the accused entered the victim’s car at the parking lot in front of the Sentosa Parade shop block at Jalan Penrissen. Sitting in the back seat, he suddenly wrapped his right arm around her neck and choked her.
The woman fought back, biting his hand, honking the car horn, and securing her sling bag tightly between her thighs. Startled, the accused fled to a compact car and escaped.
Police arrested him the following morning at around 1am after the victim lodged a report. Investigations confirmed that he had attempted to rob the victim by choking her to force her to hand over her bag. The victim sustained injuries to her neck but managed to clearly identify her attacker.
Prosecuting Officer Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.
