A 60-year-old man was killed after the four-wheel drive he was driving was crushed by an overturned cement lorry in an accident along Jalan Deshon, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Rosli Dhobi, here today.
In the incident, which occurred at about 12 noon, the victim, identified as Lee Teck Kee, was trapped inside his Toyota Hilux after the lorry toppled onto the vehicle.
A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre (PGO) said an emergency call was received at 12.18pm, prompting the deployment of eight firefighters from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found the Toyota Hilux badly crushed under the cement lorry. The victim was still inside the vehicle and unconscious. Initial rescue efforts to extricate the victim were unsuccessful due to the position of the lorry resting on the vehicle,” the spokesperson said.
As a result, assistance from two private cranes was required to lift the cement lorry. Once the vehicle was freed, the victim was successfully removed but was later pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.
The body was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.
