French police arrested a passenger at a Paris train station after discovering he was hiding luxury jewelry worth around RM51.5 million in his underwear, according to the German news agency dpa.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Monday that an investigation into handling stolen goods by a criminal gang has been opened against the man and an accomplice, who was also detained.
Authorities also found a metal-cutting tool in their luggage.
According to Le Parisien, citing investigators, both men were previously known to authorities and were stopped during a routine check at the Gare de Lyon station after the arrival of a long-distance train.
The search revealed that one of the men had hidden a stocking in his underwear containing a luxury watch and several other pieces of jewelry.
Seized items included a necklace valued at around RM25.75 million, a pair of earrings worth over RM10.3 million, and a ring valued at RM5.15 million.
