A 31-year-old local man was arrested yesterday for allegedly being involved in several incidents of underwear theft around Mutiara Rini and Gelang Patah.
Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan, said the police were first notified last Thursday by a 50-year-old man who reported that underwear belonging to him and his wife, which had been hung outside to dry, was stolen around 3:10 pm.
“Acting on the report, our team managed to apprehend the suspect in Gelang Patah at approximately 6:30 pm yesterday,” Kumarasan stated.
Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly stole underwear hanging outside homes, reaching over fences to take the items. The arrest led to the recovery of various stolen items, including 52 pieces of women’s underwear, 12 pieces of women’s panties, two men’s underpants, and a green clothes hanger.
“With the arrest, the police believe they have solved four reported cases of underwear theft dating back to May,” he added.
Kumarasan noted that the suspect has no prior criminal record, and initial drug screening results were negative. The suspect is now remanded for four days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist in investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
