A man in China had a miraculous escape after a wooden chopstick suddenly bounced off a restaurant table and shot directly into his face, piercing through his eyeglass lens during a shocking dining accident.
The incident happened on Monday in Pingdingshan, Henan province, during the final moments of a meal gathering.
According to the man involved, identified only by his surname Zong, a female friend sitting opposite casually tossed a wooden chopstick onto the table without realising the danger.
However, the chopstick unexpectedly rebounded at high speed after hitting the tabletop and flew straight towards his face “like a hidden weapon”.
Fortunately, Zong was wearing a pair of sturdy glasses at the time, which absorbed the impact and prevented what could have been a devastating eye injury.
Photos shared after the incident showed the chopstick had pierced a clean hole through the eyeglass lens, but remarkably, the lens did not shatter or send glass fragments into his eye.
Zong escaped completely unharmed and later described the experience as terrifyingly close to disaster.
He reportedly spent 60 yuan the following day to replace the damaged lens.
The bizarre incident quickly drew attention online, with many social media users expressing shock over how an ordinary chopstick nearly caused a serious injury.
Medical experts also used the case as a reminder that horseplay during meals can turn common utensils into dangerous objects if handled carelessly.
Authorities further advised that if a sharp object becomes lodged in the body during an accident, people should never attempt to pull it out themselves, as the object may temporarily help stop severe bleeding.
Instead, they urged the public to remain calm, stabilise the object and seek immediate medical attention to avoid further injury or infection.
