Man Sentenced To Four Months In Prison For Injuring Girlfriend’s Ex-Husband With Knife

Date:

The Magistrates’ Court has handed down a four-month prison sentence to a 23-year-old man for causing physical injury to his girlfriend’s former husband during a violent confrontation. Magistrate Romario Jonoi delivered the verdict after the accused, Maxwell Milak, entered a guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code. This particular section of the law carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments upon a successful conviction.

According to the court proceedings, the incident occurred on March 21, 2026, at approximately 6:48 pm within the compound of a residence located on Jalan Chong Sang, Sibu, Sarawak. The conflict reportedly began when the 32-year-old complainant arrived at the house with the intention of visiting his children. However, his arrival led to a heated verbal dispute with Maxwell, who is currently in a relationship with the complainant’s ex-wife, escalating the tension between the two men.

The facts of the case revealed that the altercation turned physical when the complainant allegedly initiated the violence by punching Maxwell in the face. In an immediate act of retaliation, Maxwell swung a 19-cm knife toward the complainant, resulting in a laceration to the older man’s right cheek. Following the report of the assault, police moved swiftly to arrest Maxwell at the same residence at approximately 1:00 am the following day and successfully recovered the weapon used in the attack.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi ordered that the four-month jail term commence from the date of the conviction to ensure the swift administration of justice. During the sentencing phase, the court took into account the circumstances surrounding the provocation, though it maintained that the use of a sharp weapon remained a serious offence under Malaysian law. The prosecution of the case was managed by ASP Sokolinkam Changgan, while the accused chose to proceed with the legal matter without the assistance of a lawyer.

The case highlights the severe legal consequences of using dangerous weapons to settle personal or domestic disputes, regardless of the initial provocation. Local authorities continue to advise the public to seek peaceful resolutions to family-related disagreements or involve the relevant agencies to mediate such high-tension interactions. With the sentencing concluded, Maxwell has been transported to begin serving his time, marking the end of the legal proceedings for this specific violent encounter.
