A man shared a frightening experience after allegedly being charged RM1,469 for parking at a location using an automatic license plate scanning system.
He said that initially, the system displayed a fee of RM5 when his vehicle’s number plate was scanned. However, when he attempted to make the payment, the amount reportedly jumped suddenly to RM1,469.

“I was stunned. How did it suddenly become over RM1,000 for parking? I had only been there for a few hours,” he wrote on Facebook. “Good thing I didn’t just ‘tap’ my card, or I would have lost over RM1,000 instantly.”
Worried about potential issues with claiming a refund, he decided to reverse his car and try to exit through another gate. However, the attempt failed as the system could not detect his license plate, forcing him to use the intercom to contact parking staff.
“While waiting, I just reversed and went back to the first exit gate. When my plate was scanned again, the fee returned to RM5. Thankfully, I quickly tapped my card, the barrier opened, and I drove out,” he added.
Following the incident, he advised the public to always double-check the payment amount before paying—not just at parking lots but at all counters.
“Don’t just ‘tap’ or scan without checking. If there’s a wrong charge, getting a refund can be troublesome, especially when using a debit card,” he warned.
