A 32-year-old man has been arrested by police after allegedly hacking his close friend to death over a debt dispute worth 25 million rupiah (approximately RM6,370) in Pinrang, South Sulawesi.
According to Pinrang Criminal Investigation Department Chief, AKP Ananda Gunawan, the violent incident occurred along Jalan Anggrek, Paleteang District, around 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect met the victim to demand repayment of a debt. However, when the victim refused to pay, the suspect became enraged and attacked him with a machete,” said Ananda.
The victim sustained severe injuries to the neck and legs and was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital.
Police quickly arrived at the scene, arrested the suspect, and seized the weapon used in the attack.
Ananda said the case is being investigated under Article 340 of the Indonesian Penal Code for premeditated murder, with additional probes under Articles 338 and 351(1) for murder and assault.
“The main motive is believed to be an unpaid debt. The suspect claimed he had repeatedly asked the victim to settle the amount, but his requests were ignored,” Ananda added.
