A 44-year-old unemployed man allegedly smothered his 41-year-old girlfriend with a pillow, leading to her death, in a rented house in Taman Damai II, Batu Pahat, last Thursday.
Batu Pahat Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani, said the suspect’s actions were reportedly driven by jealousy, as he suspected the woman of having another lover.
The murder reportedly took place last Tuesday, but the victim’s body was found on the bed beside the suspect, who was in critical condition after attempting to take his own life by slashing his neck and left wrist with a sharp weapon.
“Investigations indicate the suspect acted due to suspicions about his girlfriend’s relationship with another man,” Shahrulanuar stated.
Police have recorded part of the suspect’s statement to help determine the full motive behind the killing.
Meanwhile, the Magistrate’s Court has extended the suspect’s remand by six days to allow police to complete their investigations, including continuing his interrogation. Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman approved the extension, which will last until next Tuesday, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Earlier, the suspect, who had been discharged from Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI), arrived at the Batu Pahat court compound at 8.30am with his neck bandaged following his suicide attempt.
