A man surnamed Wang has been sentenced to 80 days in detention, convertible to a fine, for property damage and threats after he smashed his friend’s car over a dispute involving past and current girlfriends.
According to the Kaohsiung District Court, Wang and the victim, surnamed Li, had been close friends for many years. Wang became upset after discovering that Li had been involved with his ex-girlfriend, and later, his current girlfriend, during outings together.
On the morning of December 23, 2023, at around 9 a.m., Wang went to Li’s residence and smashed Li’s car with a baseball bat. Later that evening, Wang sent Li a threatening message, saying: “Using Class 1 and 2 drugs, having sex with my girlfriend, come out now or I’ll crash my car into the house.” Fearing for his safety, Li did not confront him and called the police.
During the trial, Wang admitted to his actions. However, Li had passed away a month after the incident, making reconciliation impossible. Wang asked the judge for leniency, citing his responsibility to care for his elderly mother. The court sentenced him to 80 days in detention, which can be converted to a fine, and the ruling is open to appeal.
