Marine Police Nab Elderly Man, Seize RM146,784 in Untaxed Cigarettes in Taiping

Marine police arrested a 64-year-old man and confiscated untaxed cigarettes worth RM146,784 during a raid at a house in Taman Suria Damai, Taiping, Perak yesterday.

Region 1 Marine Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Rusley Chi Ari, said the arrest was carried out by the Kampung Acheh Marine Police Unit as part of Op Kontraban at around 4.15 pm.

“The suspect was detained inside the house, where officers discovered various types of untaxed cigarettes stored in a ground-floor room,” he said in a statement today.

According to Rusley, the seized cigarettes were valued at RM74,400, with an estimated RM72,384 in unpaid duties.

The suspect, along with the confiscated items, was taken to the Pokok Assam police station for further action. He reportedly admitted to being actively involved in the distribution of untaxed cigarettes in the Taiping area.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Authorities are continuing their probe to trace the source of the illegal goods.
