Math Teacher Probed After Asking Students to Calculate Dinner Costs Based on Girls’ Weight

Date:

A veteran math teacher at San Francisco’s Lowell High School is under investigation after reportedly including sexist and fat-phobic questions on a recent quiz. Tom Chan, who has taught at the elite school for over 20 years, is currently on leave while the school probes complaints from parents and students.

The controversial questions asked students to calculate dinner costs based on girls’ weights, with one scenario asking how much it would cost to take a 120-pound girl versus a 220-pound girl out to eat. Another question asked students, “If you can only afford $5, how much would your date weigh and what is his/her name?”

In addition, some questions contained inappropriate references, including statements about punting overweight children and personal inquiries into students’ height, weight, or whether they considered themselves “pretty or smart.” A parent told the San Francisco Chronicle that families feared reporting Chan due to potential retaliation or refusal to write college recommendation letters.

Former students described Chan as well-liked but acknowledged his unconventional methods. Seniors Jayden Grajeda and Ezra Medad said while some quiz questions seemed unusual, Chan was “a lovable and enjoyable teacher” who took time to ensure students understood the material.

The school district confirmed it is actively investigating the matter but declined to provide further details. Lowell High School and Chan have not publicly commented on the allegations.
