A cake factory in Taman Angkasa Nuri, Batu Berendam, has been ordered to close immediately for 14 days after authorities discovered it operating in severely unhygienic conditions, with the stench of rat and cockroach droppings permeating the premises.
The unhygienic state was uncovered during a joint inspection by the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council and the Melaka Health Department on Tuesday.
Council president Datuk Sapiah Haron described the factory’s cleanliness level as “highly unsatisfactory,” noting dirt and pest waste scattered throughout the facility.
“A significant amount of rat and cockroach droppings was found in the food storage area. The walls were filthy, and damaged water pipes contributed to the foul odour,” she said. “Due to food safety risks, the premises have been ordered to close for 14 days under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.”
The factory owner was also issued two notices under Regulation 33(1)(b) of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 for failing to maintain a contamination-free environment.
During the same operation, a nearby bread factory received two notices for poor hygiene and for food handlers not observing proper personal hygiene, violations under Section 11(1)(c) of the Food Act and Regulation 8(1)(a).
Additionally, a wantan noodle factory in Taman Merdeka was issued three notices under Regulation 32(1)(b) after its production area was deemed at risk of contamination.
“All three premises were instructed to take corrective measures after recording cleanliness scores between 72 and 82 per cent,” Sapiah added.
