The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning following forecasts of heavy rain expected across several areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah until 5pm today.
In a statement, MetMalaysia said in Peninsular Malaysia, affected areas include Terengganu (Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman) and Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Kuantan and Rompin).
Heavy rain is also expected in Selangor (Kuala Langat and Sepang), Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson and Jempol) and Johor (Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).
In Sarawak, severe weather is forecast for Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit and Selangau), Mukah (Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu, and Miri (Subis and Miri).
In Sabah, the warning covers the Interior Division (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Tambunan), West Coast, Tawau, Sandakan (Tongod, Telupid and Beluran) and Kudat.
MetMalaysia said the thunderstorm warning is issued when there are signs of severe weather conditions with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, expected to last for more than an hour.
It added that the warning is a short-term advisory valid for up to six hours from the time of issuance.
