MetMalaysia Issues Thunderstorm Warning For Multiple States Until 5 PM Today

Date:

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a nationwide thunderstorm warning, predicting heavy rain and strong winds across several states including Selangor, Johor, and Sarawak. Valid until 5:00 pm today, Monday, 30 March 2026, the alert highlights a significant atmospheric disturbance expected to impact both Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. Authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant as the intense weather conditions may lead to flash floods in low-lying areas or cause damage to temporary structures.

In Peninsular Malaysia, the warning covers specific districts in Kedah (Baling) and extensive areas in Perak, including Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang, and Muallim. Residents in the highlands of Pahang (Cameron Highlands and Bentong) should also prepare for sudden downpours. Meanwhile, in the Klang Valley and surrounding regions, the affected areas include Hulu Selangor, Gombak, and Hulu Langat in Selangor, as well as multiple districts in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and northern Johor (Tangkak and Muar).

Turning to East Malaysia, the weather warning extends across several divisions in Sarawak. Residents in Kuching (including Bau), Serian, Samarahan (Simunjan), Sri Aman, Betong, and Mukah (Tanjung Manis and Daro) are expected to experience heavy rainfall. Additionally, the Kapit division, specifically Song and Belaga, is on high alert. In Sabah, the interior regions of Beaufort and Nabawan, alongside the West Coast—encompassing Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, and Kota Belud—are predicted to face similar turbulent conditions.

MetMalaysia issues such warnings as a mechanical necessity when there are clear signs of thunderstorms with rain intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that are expected to last for more than an hour. These short-term alerts are typically valid for a period not exceeding six hours from the time of issuance. The department emphasised that the convergence of high moisture and wind speed increases the risk of lightning strikes and falling trees, urging motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads during this period.

The public is encouraged to stay updated via the official MetMalaysia website, the myCuaca mobile application, and authorized social media channels for the latest weather developments. As the monsoon transition period continues to influence local weather patterns, such rapid shifts in conditions are common. Residents in the identified “red zones” are advised to avoid outdoor activities and seek sturdy shelter until the storm subsides later this evening.
