MetMalaysia Issues Thunderstorm Warnings For Several Districts In Sabah And Sarawak

Date:

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather warning involving expectations of thunderstorms and heavy rain across several districts in Sarawak and Sabah. The advisory, which remains in effect until 6:00 pm today, warns residents of potential flash floods and strong winds during the affected period. The shift in weather patterns comes as part of the transition phase of the monsoon, often characterised by intense but short-lived downpours in the late afternoon.

In Sarawak, the primary areas under alert include the Kapit district, specifically Belaga, as well as the Limbang region. Residents in these inland and northern areas have been advised to stay vigilant as heavy rain could lead to reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions. Local authorities have urged the public to postpone any river-based activities or outdoor excursions until the weather clears to avoid risks associated with sudden water surges.

Similarly, in Sabah, the warning covers the Interior (Pedalaman) division, focusing on the districts of Sipitang and Beaufort. The West Coast (Pantai Barat) is also expected to be affected, with Papar and Penampang identified as high-risk zones for thunderstorm activity. The sudden change in weather follows a period of relatively dry conditions in some of these districts, increasing the likelihood of localized flooding in areas with poor drainage.

As the warning is set to persist throughout the evening, commuters are reminded to exercise caution on the roads. Heavy rain in the afternoon can lead to significant traffic delays and dangerous driving conditions, especially in hilly terrains across the interior of Sabah and Sarawak.

MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates should the weather conditions deteriorate or extend beyond the current 6:00 pm deadline.
