The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a short-term weather warning for several key regions in West Malaysia, predicting intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. The alert, which remains in effect until 7.00 pm today, Tuesday, 24 March 2026, covers major urban centres including Kuala Lumpur and several districts within Selangor and Perak.
In the state of Selangor, the warning specifically targets the districts of Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, and Hulu Langat. Residents in these areas should prepare for sudden downpours that could impact evening commutes and outdoor activities. Simultaneously, the entire Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is expected to experience similar volatile weather conditions as the storm system moves across the Klang Valley.
Further north, the state of Perak is bracing for significant weather disruptions across several districts. The affected areas include Larut, Matang and Selama, Manjung, Kampar, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang, and Muallim. Authorities have advised those in these regions to remain vigilant against potential flash floods or falling branches caused by the anticipated high-velocity winds.
MetMalaysia issues these specific warnings when there are clear indications of thunderstorms with rain intensity exceeding 20 mm per hour that are expected to last for more than 60 minutes. These alerts serve as critical short-term notifications, typically valid for a duration not exceeding six hours from the time of issuance to ensure public safety and situational awareness.
Commuters and residents in the affected zones are urged to monitor official weather updates and seek sturdy shelter during the peak of the storm. Given the timing of the alert, the heavy rain is likely to coincide with the evening rush hour, potentially leading to traffic congestion and hazardous driving conditions on major highways and arterial roads.
