The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states and territories, effective until 6:00 p.m. today (Tuesday, September 9, 2025).
The affected areas include Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai), Terengganu (Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun), Pahang (Pekan, Rompin), Johor, and parts of Sarawak such as Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah (Tanjung Manis and Daro), Kapit (Song), Bintulu, Miri, and Limbang. In Sabah, the warning covers Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau, Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud), Kudat (Kota Marudu, Pitas), and Labuan.
MetMalaysia explained that the alert is issued when thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent or expected to last for more than one hour. The warning is short-term and valid for up to six hours per issuance.
