MetMalaysia: Minor Quakes in Johor Linked to Mersing Fault Zone

Date:

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has identified the Mersing Fault Zone as the area most likely to experience earthquakes in Peninsular Malaysia.

National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah said the recent tremors in Johor were minor quakes and are not expected to cause major impact.

According to MetMalaysia, one minor earthquake and five aftershocks were recorded around Segamat, Johor, between August 24 and two days ago, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.1.

“The earthquake on August 24 was felt in several areas across Johor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, and southern Pahang. However, no tremors were reported in those areas during the aftershocks from August 27 onwards,” Abdul Halim said in a statement.

Meanwhile, he noted that Malaysia is still in the midst of the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10 and will last until September. The season is marked by winds consistently blowing from the southwest, leading to lower humidity and reduced rainfall in many regions.

“During this monsoon period, dry days are expected to outnumber wet days. From July to September, local and cross-border haze could develop if open burning is not properly controlled,” he explained.

He added that although the Nongfa Tropical Depression has dissipated and wind speeds are expected to weaken slightly, storm lines remain possible. These can trigger thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds in western Peninsular Malaysia, western Sabah, and northern Sarawak during the early morning.

“Inland and eastern parts of the peninsula, along with eastern Sabah and Sarawak, can expect thunderstorms and rainfall in the afternoon and evening throughout this period,” Abdul Halim said.
