A mother and her son tragically died this morning after becoming trapped in an apartment fire at the Dato Senu People’s Housing Project (PPR).
The victims, an 82-year-old woman and her 58-year-old son, were found in the bathroom of their unit after the blaze engulfed the apartment, the City Fire and Rescue Department said.
“The operations control centre received an emergency call via the NG MERS 999 system at 7.18am regarding the incident,” the department said in a statement. “Firefighters from the Sentul Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by the Gombak Selatan Fire and Rescue Station, were immediately dispatched to the scene.”
Upon arrival, the team discovered the fire had engulfed a 6m by 6m unit. Six hose lines from fire engines were deployed to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby apartments.
The fire was brought under control at 7.51am, with an estimated 40 per cent damage reported, and was fully extinguished by 8.27am. Health Ministry personnel later confirmed the deaths of the mother and son.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Videos circulating on social media showed flames billowing from the apartment’s windows as the incident unfolded.
