In Kunming, Yunnan, a mother experienced a sudden health scare while helping her 9-year-old son with homework. Frustrated by his performance, she became emotionally agitated and developed difficulty breathing, eventually collapsing beside the sofa and unable to speak. Her quick-thinking son immediately called the police for help. Fortunately, emergency responders diagnosed her with “respiratory alkalosis” caused by hyperventilation, and she was treated in hospital with no serious complications.
According to local media reports, the Songming County Public Security Bureau in Kunming said they received a call from the boy, who explained that his mother was breathing rapidly, and that only he and his infant sister were at home, as their father was working elsewhere.
Police rushed to the scene and found the mother collapsed by the sofa, her hands displaying “claw-like” spasms. Emergency personnel confirmed that her symptoms were caused by hyperventilation leading to respiratory alkalosis, and she recovered after treatment.
One officer recalled asking the boy whether his mother had been arguing with his father, to which the child replied, “No, she said my homework wasn’t done properly.” The police gently responded, “So your mother got angry because of your homework? Make sure you study well next time, so she doesn’t get upset.”
The boy reportedly knew to call 110 in an emergency because his school had taught him about it.
Doctors explained that prolonged rapid breathing combined with emotional stress can trigger respiratory alkalosis. In this condition, free calcium levels in the blood drop, causing overexcitable nerves and muscles. This can lead to visible symptoms such as the “claw-like” hand spasms observed in the mother, which are typical signs of respiratory alkalosis.
Medical professionals warned that patients may also experience numbness or tingling in the mouth and limbs, chest tightness, dizziness, blurred vision, or seizures. In severe cases, low potassium levels can cause life-threatening heart rhythm disturbances.
Although non-pathological respiratory alkalosis is usually self-limiting and rarely fatal, doctors urge immediate medical attention if symptoms such as claw-like hand stiffness, numb lips, speech difficulty, altered consciousness, seizures, fainting, or heart irregularities occur.
