Mother Sparks Outrage After Trying To Steal Supermarket Basket

Date:

A mother sparked online outrage after attempting to take a supermarket shopping basket, along with her purchased items, home without returning it.

A netizen shared the incident on social media platform Threads, saying the mother had openly told her child to place the basket in the car, ignoring staff reprimands.

“She had no intention of returning it, and didn’t care even when told off,” the post said.

The incident reportedly took place at a branch of a chain supermarket in Taipan, Selangor. The post quickly drew criticism online, with many netizens calling the behaviour theft.

Some users shared that they always ask for staff permission if they temporarily move a basket or trolley to their vehicle, returning it immediately afterward.

The post also noted that if a basket is lost, supermarket managers and assistants are responsible for the cost, which is RM250 per basket. One netizen shared a personal story:

“In the past, a shopping cart went missing. I searched the whole area and eventually found it at a customer’s house, who returned it. RM250 isn’t a small amount — and that’s just a basket. Imagine if it were a full trolley?”

Other netizens also revealed they had seen customers take entire shopping trolleys home, which left many shocked.
