Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has filed an appeal against the High Court’s decision that denied his request to serve the remainder of his six-year SRC jail term under house arrest.
Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, confirmed that the notice of appeal was filed on December 24. The High Court had ruled on December 22 that Najib’s addendum order for house arrest was invalid, as it was not issued during a Pardons Board meeting and did not comply with constitutional procedures.
Najib has been serving his SRC sentence at Kajang Prison since August 2022 for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. His six-year term is set to end in August 2028 or 2029, depending on the payment of a RM50 million fine, though a one-third remission for good behavior could shorten his time in prison.
Separately, Najib was found guilty last Friday (December 26) in the 1MDB case, receiving 15 years’ imprisonment and fines totaling RM13.461 billion for abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion. The 1MDB sentence will commence after he completes his SRC term.
Muhammad Farhan noted that the appeal for the 1MDB conviction has not yet been filed, pending verification of the written court order. The High Court had ordered that all jail terms in the 1MDB case run concurrently, with additional jail time in default of fines.
