Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was today found guilty by the High Court on four counts of abuse of power linked to the misappropriation of nearly RM2.2 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, now a Federal Court judge and who presided over the trial during his tenure at the High Court, delivered the decision in a packed courtroom after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Najib was convicted of abusing his authority by leveraging his positions as prime minister, finance minister and chairman of 1MDB’s board of advisers to obtain personal financial benefits amounting to RM2.22 billion.
The court has yet to rule on the remaining 21 charges against Najib, which relate to the alleged laundering of the funds through his personal accounts at AmIslamic Bank.
Proceedings are ongoing as the judge continues to read his judgment.
