Netizens Fume After Foreigner Allegedly Caught Begging At Kedah R&R

Date:

The presence of so-called “begpackers” has remained a sensitive issue among Malaysians in recent years, with growing criticism directed at foreign travellers accused of taking advantage of local generosity.

The latest controversy emerged after a Malaysian claimed on Threads to have seen a foreigner begging at the Gurun Selatan Rest and Recreation (R&R) area in Kedah, a location meant for motorists to rest rather than for solicitation.

“Some of them behave badly. They come to Malaysia and end up roaming around and begging to finance their travels,” the post alleged, adding that R&R areas are inappropriate venues for such activities.

A photograph shared alongside the post showed a foreign man sitting on the ground at the R&R stop, with two pieces of cardboard placed in front of him. Several RM5 notes were visible next to the cardboard, indicating that members of the public had given him money.

The matter has since been reported to the authorities, although further details have yet to be disclosed.

The alleged incident sparked anger among netizens, many of whom highlighted what they described as double standards faced by Malaysians when travelling abroad, particularly to Western countries. Others claimed that such tourists beg mainly to sustain their journeys.

“Malaysians travelling to Australia, England or the United States are questioned, investigated and even asked to show bank statements. But in Malaysia, it seems free and easy,” one user wrote.

Another commenter suggested that sympathy plays a role, saying some foreign travellers are aware that locals may still donate money. “They know people here will feel sorry for them, and that gives them a sense of privilege,” the user said.

The renewed backlash has once again raised questions over enforcement and public awareness, as Malaysians continue to debate how the issue of begpackers should be addressed.
