New Lawas Airport Project Progressing Steadily, Targeted For 2028 Completion

Date:

Construction work on the new Lawas Airport is moving ahead steadily, with key progress currently focused on the 4km airport access road and Phase 1 of the main civil works.

The Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) said a progress meeting and site inspection were carried out on April 17 to assess the current status of the project, which falls under the Ministry of Transport and began last year.

Ongoing works at the site include clearance and grubbing, excavation, rock blasting, grading, as well as drainage and embankment construction. Authorities noted that despite the challenging terrain, which requires extensive hill cutting to reach required formation levels, construction activities are continuing at a steady pace.

RECODA added that the project remains on schedule, with full completion targeted for April 2028. Once completed, the airport is expected to significantly improve connectivity for Lawas and surrounding areas, while also supporting broader economic development in northern Sarawak.

The new facility will be a 3C-class airport capable of handling more than 100,000 passengers annually. It is designed to replace the existing airport, which faces limitations due to flooding risks and a short runway located near the winding Lawas River.
