Nursery Worker Charged With Murder Of Four-Month-Old Infant In Seberang Jaya

Date:

A 22-year-old nursery employee appeared before the Seberang Jaya Magistrate’s Court today, charged with the murder of a four-month-old baby boy last week. The accused, Nur Farhana Fazmar Abdullah, nodded in understanding as the charge was read before Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit. No plea was recorded at this stage, as murder cases fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the High Court.

The incident allegedly took place at the Taska Pintar Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) between 1:00 am and 4:00 am on 9 March. The victim, the son of a nurse working the night shift, had been placed at the 24-hour childcare facility while his mother was on duty. According to police reports, the infant was rushed to the HSJ Emergency Department in an unconscious state at 4:20 am, where medical professionals performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for an hour before confirming his death.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a prison sentence of up to 40 years. If the death penalty is not imposed, the law mandates a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Muhaimin Hashim.

Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah denied bail for the accused and set 23 June for the next mention of the case. This period will allow the court to await the necessary chemistry and post-mortem reports. In a related development, another 22-year-old woman who was initially detained alongside the accused has been released on a RM10,000 bond to serve as a prosecution witness.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed yesterday that the post-mortem results indicated the cause of death was drowning. The tragic loss of the infant has sparked significant concern regarding the safety protocols within 24-hour childcare centres located at medical facilities. Further updates on the legal proceedings are expected following the submission of the forensic evidence in June.
