Police have restricted the sale of festive pyrotechnics for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration to just two approved items, warning that strict action will be taken against offenders.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said only ‘Happy Boom’ fireworks and ‘Pop-Pop’ firecrackers are permitted, as both products do not contain explosive materials.
Permit Still Required
Despite the approval, traders must obtain a valid permit from the relevant district police headquarters before selling the items. Sales must also adhere to the prescribed specifications set by the authorities.
Fadil cautioned that possession, sale, purchase or use of fireworks and firecrackers outside the approved list constitutes an offence under Sections 7 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
Upon conviction, offenders face a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
No Fireworks After Midnight
The police chief further reminded the public to refrain from lighting fireworks and firecrackers after midnight, stressing that excessive noise could disturb public order and pose safety risks.
Non-compliance may also result in action under the Minor Offences Act 1955 in addition to existing explosives laws.
Fadil emphasised that unauthorised handling of fireworks remains illegal regardless of the festive season, urging members of the public to observe the regulations to safeguard community safety and well-being.
He said adherence to the law is crucial to ensuring that celebrations remain joyful without compromising public security.
