Over 14kg Of Heroin Seized From Malaysian Man Entering Singapore Via Motorcycle

Date:

Authorities have arrested two men in separate incidents at Singapore’s land checkpoints this week, seizing a massive haul of narcotics with an estimated street value of over RM6.5 million (S$2 million). The operations, conducted by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), resulted in the recovery of a significant quantity of heroin, methamphetamine, and cannabis. According to a joint statement released on Saturday, the total amount of drugs seized could have potentially sustained the addictions of more than 8,100 abusers for an entire week.

The first and more substantial seizure occurred in the early hours of 17 March at the Tuas Checkpoint. ICA officers intercepted a 29-year-old Malaysian man riding a motorcycle and directed the vehicle for an enhanced security check. Upon inspecting the motorcycle’s rear storage box, officers discovered several suspicious black bundles. Further investigation by CNB personnel revealed a total of 25 bundles containing approximately 14kg of heroin, 2.6kg of “Ice” (methamphetamine), and 190g of Ecstasy, leading to the immediate arrest of the rider.

A second, unrelated arrest took place the following day on 18 March at the Woodlands Checkpoint. Officers stopped a Malaysia-registered vehicle and conducted a search on a 29-year-old Singaporean man who was travelling as a passenger. During the inspection, a bundle containing roughly 81g of cannabis was found concealed around the man’s waistline, near his groin area. Subsequent searches by CNB officers also uncovered various drug paraphernalia in the suspect’s possession, and he was taken into custody for further questioning.

The severity of these offences is underscored by Singapore’s strict anti-narcotics legislation under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973. Individuals found guilty of importing or exporting more than 15g of diamorphine (pure heroin) or more than 250g of methamphetamine may face the mandatory death penalty. Investigations into both cases are currently ongoing as authorities work to trace the origins and intended destinations of the seized substances.

The ICA has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining rigorous security measures at all national borders to combat the smuggling of illicit goods. By working closely with partner agencies like the CNB, the authority aims to detect and prevent the entry of controlled drugs, weapons, and other contraband. These latest arrests serve as a stark reminder of the continuous efforts by law enforcement to safeguard the community from the dangers posed by the illegal drug trade.
