Penang has launched a WhatsApp-based communication system to enhance coordination among relevant agencies and prepare for potential floods in identified areas.
State Secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long said the platform allows hourly updates on rainfall intensity, affected areas, and flood hotspots. “We are working closely with METMalaysia, which provides hourly early weather forecasts. The Penang State Disaster Management Committee will take action based on these updates,” he said during the state legislative assembly sitting today.
District officers, through village heads, will directly monitor vulnerable areas, while temporary evacuation centres have been activated to ensure residents can relocate quickly if needed.
The alert follows a report from the National Flood Control and Warning Centre (PRABN) forecasting possible flooding across 20 river basin locations in Penang from November 19 to 21. Areas prone to frequent flooding, including those affected last month, are also being closely monitored.
Zulkifli added that operations rooms have been activated to ensure effective flood management and coordination during the ongoing rainy period.
