A fire broke out early this morning at the Pulau Burung landfill, triggering an immediate response from firefighters.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director John Sagun Francis said an emergency call was received at 6.39am, and the first fire engine arrived at 6.56am. The landfill is located about 8km from the Nibong Tebal fire and rescue station.
He said the blaze involved a large pile of waste covering an area estimated at 100 by 50 metres — roughly two-thirds the size of a football field. “As of now, the fire is still not under control and firefighting efforts are ongoing,” he added.
No casualties have been reported. A similar incident occurred at the landfill in July last year, believed to have been sparked by hot weather.
