Penang Police Investigating Firework Stall Blaze In Taman Pekaka

Date:

The Royal Malaysia Police have initiated a formal investigation into a fire that completely destroyed a licensed firework stall in Taman Pekaka yesterday. Penang Police Chief, Datuk Azizee Ismail, confirmed that five official police reports have been lodged regarding the incident as of today. The investigation is currently being conducted under Section 286 of the Penal Code, which specifically addresses negligence in the handling of explosive substances that could endanger human life or cause injury.

The blaze, which occurred in a residential and commercial area, resulted in significant property damage although no loss of life was reported. Aside from the total destruction of the stall itself, a Yamaha Y15 motorcycle parked nearby was estimated to have sustained 90 per cent damage. Furthermore, the intense heat and flames spread to a neighbouring residential property, affecting three external air-conditioning units attached to the building.

Authorities have indicated that several individuals will be summoned in the coming days to provide their statements and assist in the ongoing probe. The stall, which was located opposite a local nasi kandar restaurant, was reportedly operating with a valid permit issued for the period between 19 February and 24 March. Investigators are now focused on determining the exact cause of the ignition and whether safety protocols regarding the storage of pyrotechnics were strictly followed by the operators.

The incident has drawn public attention and sparked calls for greater transparency regarding the issuance of temporary permits for explosive goods. The Nibong Tebal division of Armada Bersatu has publicly urged the police to clarify the enforcement actions taken and the specific status of the stall’s permit following the fire. This pressure from local political wings highlights growing community concerns over the placement of firework vendors in high-traffic suburban areas during festive seasons.

As the investigation continues, the police have reminded all seasonal traders to adhere to the stringent safety guidelines mandated by their permits. The final report from the Fire and Rescue Department is expected to be integrated into the police investigation to confirm if a technical fault or human error triggered the explosion. For now, the area has been cordoned off to ensure public safety while forensic teams complete their assessment of the structural damage to the nearby homes.
