Penang police have seized a total of RM33.82 million worth of various drugs through statewide operations from January to July 2025. Acting State Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said 14,146 individuals were arrested during the same period for drug-related offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Of these arrests, 4,498 were for drug trafficking and possession, with 92.71% (4,170 cases) already charged. Another 7,938 cases were investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Act for drug consumption, while 251 individuals were charged under Section 39C(1), related to repeat drug offences.
In a separate event, Penang police also disposed of more than 120kg of drugs valued at RM2 million, which were seized from 2010 to 2024 across five districts in the state. These substances, linked to 5,265 investigation files, were destroyed in collaboration with waste management company Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd.
The drugs destroyed included 19.7kg of heroin and monoacetylmorphine, 53.6kg of cannabis, 2.8kg of ketamine, 42.6kg of methamphetamine, and over 2kg of various psychotropic pills. Alwi noted that had these drugs reached the streets, they could have affected more than 1.38 million users.
The disposal was carried out at a certified facility in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, under strict environmental and safety procedures approved by the Department of Environment. All evidence was verified and transported under heavy police security to ensure transparency and prevent leaks.
Alwi reiterated the police’s commitment to fighting drug abuse, calling it the “nation’s number one enemy.”
