Perlis Court Imposes RM1,000 Fines on Trio for Littering in Public

Date:

In a landmark case in Perlis, three men were each fined RM1,000 and ordered to complete eight hours of community service after pleading guilty to littering in public, the Sessions Court ruled today.

Judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid handed down the sentences to 43-year-old Idzham Husin, 47-year-old Ahmad Nasri Mohammad Yusof, and 59-year-old Putra Che Ani, who were caught discarding cigarette butts in public areas without using proper disposal bins on separate occasions in January.

The offences took place at Dataran Sena Indah, Jeti Kuala Perlis, and outside a bank in Kangar. The trio were charged under Section 77A(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007, which allows for fines up to RM2,000 and community service of up to 12 hours within six months.

Prosecutors from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation handled the case, while all defendants appeared in court without legal representation.

This marks the first time such a prosecution has been carried out in Perlis, setting a precedent for stricter enforcement against public littering in the state.
