“Pimple-Popping Toy” Sparks Safety Concerns in New DOH Campaign

Date:

Thailand’s Department of Health (DOH) has launched a new campaign aimed at protecting children from dangerous toys — with a spotlight on a controversial new item called the “pimple-popping toy.”

The initiative was announced at the DOH Data Centre, alongside key partners including the Royal College of Paediatricians of Thailand, the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Centre, and the Foundation for Consumers.

DOH director-general Dr. Amporn Benjapolpitak expressed concern over the toy, commonly known as the “Moni Doll.” Resembling a rubber animal, the toy comes with a syringe and needle-like accessory. When filled with air or water, it creates a blister-like bump for children to “pop” — a concept that has raised alarm among health experts.

“This toy is not only unsafe due to its sharp parts, but it also mimics real medical instruments,” Dr. Amporn said.

“If children begin playing with actual syringes or needles, it could lead to serious injuries or infections, especially if they come into contact with reused or contaminated items.”

She stressed the importance of safe and age-appropriate toys, particularly for toddlers. Toys for children under three years old should be larger than 3.2cm in width and longer than 6cm to avoid choking risks. Any strings, straps, or cords should also be assessed for strangulation hazards.

Additionally, materials used in toys must be non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals or dyes, with proper safety certifications.

Dr. Amporn emphasized that play is a vital part of a child’s growth. For instance, children aged nine to 18 months benefit from sensory-stimulating toys — such as those with vivid colors, sounds, and soft textures. Safe options include baby books, fabric toys, soft rubber balls, and dolls.

She urged parents and caregivers to be vigilant when choosing toys, especially those sold in online markets or unregulated stores.
