A police corporal pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of defrauding a woman in connection with the settlement of a police summons two years ago.
The accused, 44-year-old Awang Azizan Awang Jana, requested that his case be heard after the charge was read before Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah.
According to the charge, the father of three allegedly deceived a 53-year-old woman into believing he could settle four police summonses totaling RM850 for the victim’s younger brother, in exchange for a payment of RM620. The woman subsequently transferred the money into the accused’s bank account.
The alleged offense took place at a bank in Nibong Tebal on June 12, 2024.
Awang Azizan was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both if convicted.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutors Noor Azura Zulkiflee and Nurnajihatul Idayu Mohd Azuyar. The accused appeared in court without legal representation.
During proceedings, the prosecution offered bail of RM4,000 and requested that the accused surrender his passport until the case is concluded. However, Awang Azizan requested a lower bail, citing his responsibility to support his wife, three children, and a sibling with cancer.
The court subsequently granted bail of RM3,000 with one surety. The case is set to be mentioned again on February 9.
