A 21-year-old woman has been remanded for six days to assist police investigations into the alleged abuse of her five-year-old daughter at a residence in Sentul.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the remand order runs from January 3 to January 8, following a police report lodged on January 2 at 10.53pm.
Initial investigations indicated that the child is believed to have been abused over a two-week period and suffered serious injuries. She was subsequently sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for medical examination and further treatment.
Fadil said preliminary findings revealed that the suspect is self-employed as an online clothing seller and has a previous record involving drugs. Investigators also found that the child was born out of wedlock and that her father was not present at the house at the time of the incident. The child is reported to have no siblings.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for abuse, neglect, abandonment or exposure likely to cause physical or emotional harm. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000.
