A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly masquerading as a Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) officer to rob foreign citizens. Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed that the suspect was apprehended at approximately 1.30 pm on Monday by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD). The arrest follows a series of reports involving a perpetrator targeting vulnerable foreigners under the guise of official authority.
The suspect’s modus operandi involved approaching foreign men and identifying himself as a high-ranking immigration official. He would then demand that the victims hand over their passports for inspection. Once the victims complied, the suspect would swiftly seize their wallets and cash before fleeing the scene. This deceptive tactic allowed the perpetrator to exploit the compliance of foreign nationals who feared legal repercussions or document issues.
During the operation, police recovered several items believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes. These included specific sets of clothing, a motorcycle, a helmet, and a p-hailing delivery bag. The inclusion of delivery equipment suggests the suspect may have used the disguise of a courier to move inconspicuously between locations or to scout for potential targets within the city centre.
Assistant Commissioner Sazalee stated that with the detention of the 32-year-old, the police have successfully resolved at least two reported robbery cases involving similar tactics. Investigating officers are currently in the process of completing the investigation papers. Once finalised, the findings will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for formal charges to be brought against the suspect in court.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving individuals claiming to be government officials without proper identification. Anyone with information regarding similar crimes is encouraged to contact the Dang Wangi IPD Operations Room at 03-26002222 or visit the nearest police station. Authorities remain committed to protecting all residents, including the migrant community, from predatory criminal schemes.
