Police have launched an investigation to determine whether any weaknesses or breaches of standard operating procedures (SOP) contributed to the escape of a Pakistani remand detainee from Sungai Buloh Prison on April 9.
Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the probe aims to assess whether negligence or procedural violations occurred during the incident.
“A police investigation has been opened under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code. We will examine any lapses or negligence, and appropriate action will be taken if sufficient evidence is found,” he said during a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters on Monday.
Authorities are continuing an intensive manhunt for the suspect, with police believing he is still in the vicinity of Sungai Buloh.
Search operations have been strengthened and involve multiple units, including the General Operations Force, Air Operations Force and other specialised teams.
“Numerous personnel are involved in the operation, but we cannot disclose the exact numbers due to tactical considerations,” he added.
Shazeli said statements have been recorded from various parties, including police personnel, prison officers and other detainees who may have witnessed the incident.
“So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the escape. However, certain individuals have been placed on non-active duties pending the outcome of investigations,” he said.
He added that investigations remain at an early stage, and some details cannot yet be disclosed to avoid disrupting ongoing operations.
Police also believe the escaped detainee has not established contact with any external parties, with efforts in place to prevent communication with potential accomplices.
Earlier reports identified the suspect as 24-year-old Muhammad Hassan, who is facing multiple charges, including sexual offences, robbery and immigration-related violations.
Authorities have reiterated that the suspect is still believed to be within the country as the search continues.
