Police are working to identify the owner of a mobile phone number used to send threatening messages to a PETRONAS officer regarding the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Bintulu, Sarawak.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director, Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu, said investigations are still ongoing into the threatening messages.
“We are in the process of identifying and tracking down the owner of the phone number that sent the threats related to the LNG facility and the PETRONAS officer. From a security standpoint, we will tighten and enhance control measures as operations there are still ongoing,” he told reporters during the 6th National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE) 2025 at the Royal Malaysia Police College today.
The event was officiated by Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that a PETRONAS officer in Bintulu lodged a police report after receiving multiple threatening SMS messages from an unknown individual.
“After receiving several threats through SMS, the officer made a police report. We have advised PETRONAS to step up security at all their facilities,” he said.
Yesterday, the National Security Council (NSC) also confirmed it had been informed of the security threat against LNG facilities in Bintulu. The council has instructed all LNG facilities in the area to immediately strengthen their security measures while investigations are being carried out.
