Police Seize Lorry After Raised Bucket Hits Traffic Light, Driver Allegedly Unaware

Date:

Police have seized a sand lorry after its raised rear bucket struck an electrical cable connected to a traffic light in Pekan Nanas, Pontian, an incident that later went viral on social media.

Pontian district police chief Superintendent Hadzrat Hussein Mion Hussain said preliminary investigations showed that the incident occurred at about 2.50pm yesterday. The lorry was being driven by a 53-year-old local man who was travelling from Pontian towards Pekan Nanas.

“The driver claimed he was unaware that the rear bucket was still raised and had unintentionally struck the traffic light’s electrical cable,” Hadzrat said in a statement today.

Video footage circulating online captured other road users shouting and sounding their horns in an apparent attempt to alert the driver to the raised bucket.

Hadzrat said the driver did not suffer any injuries in the incident. Police have since prepared a rough sketch of the scene and recorded statements from both the driver and his employer.

He added that a urine screening test conducted on the driver returned negative results, and the lorry involved has been seized to facilitate further investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
