A 48-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to six years in jail and five strokes of the cane on March 12 after admitting to using drugs to stay awake while working.
Lim Heong Sheng, a former technician turned private-hire driver, also sold methamphetamine, charging up to RM1,190 for 5g. He began trafficking in April 2024 after losing his previous job, sourcing the drugs from a supplier in Malaysia. Regular customers were offered 5g for RM470.
To keep his family away from the narcotics, Lim stored the drugs in his car. Central Narcotics Bureau officers arrested him at his Jurong West home on January 16, 2025, after a tip-off, seizing packets of methamphetamine and cannabis. Lim later tested positive for methamphetamine, though he claimed the cannabis was for personal use.
During sentencing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Gurmesh Singh sought six years’ jail and up to six strokes of the cane, citing the minimum penalties of five years’ jail and five strokes for trafficking, and one year for consumption.
Lim pleaded guilty to one charge each of drug consumption, trafficking, and possession, while five other charges, including possession of drug-laced vapes, were considered in sentencing.
