Rapid Rail Fined RM100,000 Over 2021 LRT Collision That Injured 65 Passengers

Date:

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has been fined RM100,000 in connection with the 2021 LRT collision that injured 65 passengers, following investigations into safety and maintenance failures.

The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) said the penalty was imposed after findings showed that the rail operator had failed to maintain critical track components in proper working condition.

The incident took place on May 24, 2021, between the KLCC and Kampung Baru stations, when two LRT trains collided, resulting in widespread injuries among commuters.

According to APAD, Rapid Rail did not ensure proper rail alignment safety, which contributed to the accident and the inability to operate the train system safely.

The case falls under Section 101(10) of the Land Public Transport Act, which allows enforcement action against operators that fail to comply with safety requirements.

APAD stressed that safety remains its top priority, adding that the fine serves as a reminder to all public transport operators to strictly adhere to maintenance standards and ensure proper staff training.

The agency also said the decision considered public interest and accountability in safeguarding the integrity of the country’s rail system.

Former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong previously stated that technical faults and communication failures between a train hostler and the operations control centre were among the causes of the crash.

In 2023, eight victims filed a civil lawsuit against Rapid Rail and Prasarana, alleging negligence over the incident.
