Seven Children Injured In Kedah After Illegal ‘Mercun Bola’ Explosion

Date:

A festive celebration turned into a tragic incident in Pendang, Kedah, after seven children were reportedly injured during a firework display. The accident, which occurred in the suburban area of Tobiar, is suspected to have been caused by the use of illegally modified “Mercun Bola” or ball firecrackers. What was intended to be a joyous evening of entertainment was cut short when a massive explosion sent shockwaves through the crowd, leaving several young bystanders in need of urgent medical attention.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the fireworks were being ignited when a sudden and violent detonation occurred, far exceeding the expected scale of a standard display. It is believed that either a technical failure during ignition or the excessive explosive power of the modified pyrotechnics caused the device to burst prematurely on the ground. The deafening blast caused immediate panic among the villagers as the force of the explosion struck those standing in the immediate vicinity.

The impact of the blast resulted in seven children sustaining various degrees of injuries, ranging from burns to lacerations caused by flying debris. Emergency responders and family members quickly transported the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment. The sudden shift from a celebratory atmosphere to a scene of chaos has left the local community in shock, casting a dark shadow over the ongoing festive period.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the firecrackers involved may have been tampered with to increase their sound and impact, a practice that is both illegal and extremely hazardous. Authorities have frequently warned against the modification of “Mercun Bola” due to their unpredictable nature and high gunpowder content. Local leaders have urged the public to stick to regulated fireworks to prevent similar life-threatening accidents from recurring in residential areas.

The police and relevant agencies have officially launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to identify those responsible for handling the pyrotechnics. Officers are currently gathering statements from witnesses and inspecting the remnants of the explosives found at the site. As the victims continue their recovery in hospital, the authorities are expected to tighten enforcement against the sale and use of prohibited explosive items throughout the state.
