Shamsul Iskandar Faces Four Corruption Charges Totalling RM176,829

Former senior political secretary to the prime minister, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, was charged in the Sessions Court today with four counts of corruption involving a total of RM176,829 in alleged gratification.

The 49-year-old pleaded not guilty before Judge Suzana Hussin.

According to the first charge, Shamsul allegedly agreed to receive RM100,000 from businessman Albert Tei as an inducement to help companies linked to Tei secure mineral exploration licence approvals in Sabah. The offence reportedly took place at the Majestic Hotel parking area in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 24, 2023.

The second charge alleges that Shamsul received furniture and electrical appliances worth RM14,580.03 from Tei on Jan 31, 2024 at a residence in Bukit Bandaraya, Kuala Lumpur, also purportedly in exchange for assistance regarding the licences.

For the third charge, Shamsul is accused of accepting RM40,000 in cash from Tei at the same Bukit Bandaraya address on Jan 29, 2024, for the same purpose.

The fourth charge alleges he received additional furniture and electrical appliances worth RM22,249 from Tei in connection with the mineral exploration approvals.

All charges were brought under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which covers offences of soliciting or receiving bribes as inducement or reward.
