A wave of MeToo reckoning may be brewing in Sibu after strong public statements from South Lanang MP Alice Lau and Bukit Assek assemblyman Chieng Ming Hock’s service team, following growing accusations against a local male influencer accused of repeatedly sexually harassing numerous women.
On Friday (July 25), the first police report was filed at Sibu Central Police Station. The female complainant, accompanied by Chieng’s team, alleged that she was subjected to verbal sexual harassment by the influencer on multiple occasions between 2022 and 2024. Motivated by a desire to protect other women, she reached out to the service team and courageously stepped forward to lodge the report.
The case has drawn increasing public attention as allegations against the influencer—known for his public appearances and interactions due to the nature of his work—have been widely circulated on social media. Numerous women have since come forward, sharing accounts of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment by the same individual.
Sources say more victims are considering filing police reports, inspired by the bravery of the first woman to take legal action.
Chieng Ming Hock’s service centre has urged any other victims seeking help to contact them directly at 012-7609822. They assured that all reports will be handled confidentially and that survivors should not be afraid to speak out.
South Lanang MP Alice Lau was the first to publicly address the matter on July 22, calling on Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili to treat the issue with utmost seriousness. She also encouraged victims to step forward and file formal complaints so that the authorities can gather sufficient evidence for legal action.
“Sexual harassment is never a trivial matter,” said Lau. “It cannot be tolerated in any form and should not end with just online outrage. It must be dealt with through the full force of the law.”
