Singapore Man Jailed 30 Weeks for Pushing Elderly Woman and Abusing Police on MRT

Date:

A 65-year-old man, Junabi Abu Bakar, was sentenced to 30 weeks’ imprisonment on Thursday after pushing a 76-year-old woman to the floor on an MRT train, then hurling abusive and racist remarks at her and other passengers, The Straits Times reported.

The October 11 incident occurred when Junabi, seated on a train from Punggol MRT station, removed his shoes. The elderly woman accidentally stepped on his foot, prompting him to push her hard, causing her to fall and injure her back. She was granted three days of medical leave.

Later that day, Junabi harassed a teenage girl at Paya Lebar MRT station. An off-duty police officer intervened, after which Junabi became aggressive, threw punches at the officer, and was arrested at Eunos MRT station. He reportedly continued using abusive and racist language toward police officers.

Junabi pleaded guilty to four charges, including voluntarily causing hurt and using abusive words toward a public servant. Prosecutors also noted a prior incident in September where Junabi punched a colleague at his cleaning job, fracturing the man’s arm and leaving bruises on his forehead.

Under Singapore law, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant can result in up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or caning, while using abusive words toward a public servant carries a maximum of one year in jail, a fine of up to S$5,000 (RM15,900), or both.
