Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has thanked the Malaysian and Thai authorities for their swift assistance in helping Singaporeans stranded in flood-hit Hat Yai return home safely.
In a Facebook post, Wong said the timely cooperation ensured the safety of affected Singaporeans, adding that the widespread flooding across Southeast Asia has been heartbreaking to witness.
“Deeply saddened by the severe flooding devastating communities across our region. The images of displacement and loss are heartbreaking. To all those affected, and to the brave responders working tirelessly to keep others safe, our thoughts and prayers are with you,” he said.
Wong also stressed that Singapore stands ready to extend support where needed during this difficult period.
He noted that the extreme weather events serve as a stark reminder of global vulnerability, emphasising that climate change recognises no borders.
“It is a global crisis that demands a global response. We must work together across nations to accelerate our efforts and build a more resilient future for our planet,” he added.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said on Monday that all 822 Singaporeans who had e-registered or contacted the ministry have safely returned from Hat Yai. He also expressed gratitude to the Thai and Malaysian governments for facilitating evacuation efforts.
“Grateful to the Malaysian government, which helped receive Singaporeans where possible and offered timely support during evacuation,” he said in his Facebook post.
